Record of the trial of Christian Ryle and his wife Catherine Ryle at the Old Bailey on 28 Feb 1848: http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=def1-937-18480228&div=t18480228-937#highlight Christian Ryle was born in Württemberg, Germany from where he migrated to England. When Christian was transported in 1849, his wife Catherine remained behind with their six children (the eldest aged 11 at the time). The family ended up in the Union Workhouse in Greenwich (where a further son Alfred was born in 1850), but found their way to the Moreton Bay settlement in 1852. Catherine died in 1855, after which Christian married Jane Finn and had a further four children with her (although they had separated by 1867).
