He was tried w/1other for stealing with force of arms handkerchiefs of shop Putney at Kingston upon Thames Surrey Assizes in 1795, sentenced to 7years, held on hulks & arrived in NSW as a convict in 1788 after a long voyage on First Fleet ship ALEXANDER. On 6 6 1789 he was responsible for capturing Black Caesar a raider of the settlement. He moved, as part of the second evacuation of NI, with his stepfather to Port Dalrymple Tasmania on 18 2 1813 on MINSTREL. He married Elizabeth (Stevens) on 18 1 1819 at St Johns CofE Launceston Tasmania where he became a farmer. He died on 21 11 1863 age71 at Norfolk Plains Tasmania. ..Elizabeth (Stevens) was born on Norfolk Island; she was the child of John (Riley) using sometimes her stepfathers name (Stevens). She moved with her parents as part of the second evacuation of NI in 1813 on MINSTREL to Port Dalrymple Tasmania & lived at Norfolk Plains (now Pateena). He was tried w/his wife & 1other for burglary & stealing candlesticks etc of Mr (Parker) of Rosslene at Dublin city Quarter Sessions at The Tholsel in March 1789, sentenced to 7years (his wife was acquitted) & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 9 1791 after a voyage of 5months on Fleet ship QUEEN. On 26 8 1792 he was sent to Norfolk Island on ATLANTIC. In 1800 he sold 100acres to John (Barnes), land that he had bought from George W (Witticar/Whittaker)-including perhaps 10acre plot No.56 at east Queensborough which was in possession of George Whitacre) in 1796. He was issued his Conditional Pardon on 1 2 1797 & his Ticket of Leave in August 1801. He became a pilot & coxswain on ships between Sydney & Norfolk Island & was pilot of the HMS PORPOISE in March 1802. He was recorded as Free by Servitude on Government boat crew in 1805. In 1810 he is recorded as farming 12acres. He moved with his children, including his stepson, to Port Dalrymplet Tasmania, as part of the second evacuation, thence to Norfolk Plains/Longford Tasmania on 18 2 1813 on MINSTREL via Sydney & settled on Esk River. In 1819 he is recorded on 90acres at Port Dalrymple Tasmania. In 1830 he sold 60acres. She associated firstly with 2jealous marines then Alexander (McDonald), her third? (3of8) relationship, another marine & produced 1child. During this time she received 25lashes for behaviour. She was sent to Norfolk Island with her son on HMS SIRIUS on 4 3 1790 arriving on 17 3 1790 (the date of its sinking on reef near Kingston Pier Slaughter Bay). She had a fourth (4of8) relationship with Thomas (Spencer his first) at Norfolk Island & produced 1child. She had a fifth (5of8) relationship with James (Riley) & produced 2children. She was Free by Servitude by 1795. She had a seventh (7of8) relationship with Thomas (Stevens) & produced 3children. She is recorded as sentence expired on stores in February 1805. She moved with her extended family as part of the second evacuation on 10/18 2 1813 on MINSTREL to Port Dalrymple Tasmania & lived at Norfolk Plains (now Pateena). She produced 1more child. William was born in 1770 at Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey. William Saltmarsh, in company with George Freeland, were found guilty of stealing handkerchiefs, with force and arms, from a shop at Putney. 1785. Sent to hulks. Sentenced to 7yrs transportation. Sailed on the 'Alexander' (First Fleet ship.) He was sent to Norfolk Island in 1790. Whilst on Norfolk Island he cohabited with Mary Butler who arrived as a convict on the Lady Juliana. Their son William was born 18/08/1792. This child also known by name Butler (his mother's name.) Mary Butler co-habited with James Jordan on Norfolk Island & she had another 5 children. She died on Norfolk Island before the family moved on to Norfolk Plains VDL in 1813. (Son William married Elizabeth Stevens at Launceston, Tasmania.He was a farmer.11 children. Wm jnr died 21/11/1863 Norfolk Plains, Tas.) On 6 June 1789 William was responsible for capturing Black Caesar who had absconded and was raiding the settlement for food. After Mary,William Saltmarsh cohabited with Elizabeth Holligan, a convict on the Prince of Wales. Elizabeth bore William's daughter, Ann, in 1799.
