Hulk Records. Sheerness Hulks, Bellerophon. HO-9-7_5 page 26. Received Twenty five prisoners from Newgate, 27 Dec 1821. Samuel Chipp, age 19, Steag. A Handkf, Tried Middlesex, 5 Dec 1821, Life, To NSW 29 Mar 1822, per Guildford.
Tried at the Old Bailey, 5 Dec 1821. 107. SAMUEL CHIPP was indicted for stealing, on the 14th of November , one handkerchief, value 2 s., the goods of Joseph Hudgell , from his person . JOSEPH HUDGELL . I am servant to Mr. Collins. On the 14th of November, I was walking in Glasshouse-street . Griffiths came up and asked if I had lost any thing; I felt, and missed my handkerchief, which he produced. JOHN GRIFFITHS . I belong to the Humane Society. I saw the prosecutor walking along; the prisoner and two others were together, one of them took the handkerchief out of the prosecutor's pocket, and gave it to the prisoner. I went and told him to follow me, and I pursued and took the prisoner; and as he ran he took the handkerchief out of his hat, and threw it down an area, it lodged on the rails, I picked it up and secured him. (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. I never saw it. GUILTY . Aged 19. Transported for Life . Second Middlesex Jury, before W. Arabin, Esq.
Norfolk Island Commandant's orders for 1835-03-31 state that, per a dispatch from the Governor dated 3 March 1835, Chipp [who is referred to as "Samuel Chipper per Guildford"] was then allowed to have his irons removed during good conduct. Source: NSW Archives 4/2244.1
