Convict Notes
Samuel Ellis 23 years old and his occupation was a "Glasscutter". 8/5/1839: Was convicted of being a accessory to murder when Andrew Shanley was shot and killed by Peter Scallion (Royal Sovereign 1833, he was hanged) at Sutton Forest. Samuel was sentenced to be transported for Life and was sent to Norfolk Island. 26/7/1845: Arrived in VDL per Governor Phillip. Samuel was then described as: 32 years old, 5'5 1/2" tall, protestant, Illiterate, single, fresh complexion, dark brown hair and bushy bears, hazel eyes, native place was Dudley, left hand swollen, left arm has been broken, small scar upper right lip. 6/2/1846: Emerged from gang at Impression Bay. 3/4/1847: Tried at Oatlands, for assaulting Joseph Newton and putting him in fear for his life and stealing his money and 4 promissary notes for £5. To be transported for life. He was sent to Port Arthur for 4 years. 11/11/1851: Was in the Hobart Port Barracks but absconded again.
