Samuel Hart, for stealing a quantity of linen, the property of Mr. W. T. Stocker, from the house of Ann Campbell, a laundress, in melville-street, was sentenced to be transported to Newcastle for the remainder of his original term of transportation. Hobart Town Gazette, 14 April 1821.

Samuel Hart, was indicted for entering the stores of Mr. Lucas, in George-street, and stealing a quantity of tea.-Guilty. To be transported for 7 years. Sydney Gazette, 26 Apr 1826. On Wednesday se'nnight, Chapman, the constable, apprehended a man named Samuel Hart, who, it may be remembered, effected his escape from the Sydney gaol about six weeks since. The man was in the act of driving a number of cattle into town, intending to sell them at market on the following morning. It appears that after he had effected his escape, from the gaol here, he hastened into the interior, and engaged himself to a settler residing about 8 miles on the other side of Liverpool, where he principally remained whilst at large, and pursued his avocations uninterruptedly. At length he was desired by his employer to become drover of a certain number of cattle. Although it may be presumed such a mandate would not be obeyed with very great readiness, yet it seems he was not overcome by a fear of detection, but determined on hazarding his person afresh. On arriving in town he was recognised by the constable, as was before mentioned, and has been re-lodged in the gaol, after undergoing an examination at the police-office. Before the prisoner had been many hours in custody, the chief constable of Liverpool arrived with a fresh charge, which he made before the Superintendent of Police. It set forth that the prisoner had been observed proceeding towards Sydney, and that on the way he had entered a small dwelling house, from whence several articles of wearing apparel had been removed ; it appears an alarm was immediately given by the owner of the property, who happened to be within twenty yards of the entrance to his own door when the robber, whose person was known to him, rushed out and made off. The whole of the prisoner's dress has been substituted for another, by orders of the Superintendent of Police. A pair of gold earrings, an article of female attire, &c. were found on his person. He appears a very hardened and determined character. He is remembered to have been an inmate of the gaol for a number of years past. Whilst even standing at the bar of the police office, he daringly asserted that if found guilty of the charges against him, and once more become subjected to the sentence of the law, he would prefer the gallows to it ; and, to obtain it, his revenge should be felt by some one. Several incidents of stealing recorded on his record, and punishments of lashes and sent to the gaol gang. Last record on his file: April 6 1821. Stealing wearing apparel from the premises of Jas. Campbell – to be transported to Newcastle fro the remainder of his original term of transportation. Tuesday. Samuel Hart, a prisoner, charged with stealing on board the ship Castle Forbes, some bottled porter, was sentenced 50 lashes and 6 months in the gaol gang. Hobart Town Gazette, Sat. 11 Mar 1820.
