We do not recollect ever seeing recorded a more audacious and blood-thirsty attempt to murder than was witnessed last Wednesday morning in the Police Office, in the presence of the Police and Sitting Magistrates. A most hardened looking fellow named Samuel Tarbitton was undergoing an examination on a charge of beating in a very dangerous and inhuman manner a boy only eight years of age, the son of Ezekiel Wood, of New Town. Just as the lad had finished his evidence, the monster instantly put his hand into his pocket, and with a razor which he took out, gave the youth a most shocking cut across the throat. The ruffian was instantly seized by the Constables in the office, handcuffed, and conveyed to gaol, where he is closely confined in a solitary cell. The poor child was carried to the General Hospital; and we are glad to say he is now in a fair way of recovery. - We understand this is the second instance in which this miscreant has attempted to take a life in this Settlement, having before stabbed person in the body with a case knife. This day Samuel Turbitton was tried before the Deputy Judge Advocate and a Bench of Magistrates, on a charge of attempting to cut - Wood, an infant (as stated in the other column of this page), and was sentenced to receive 200 lashes at the cart's tail, and to work in irons at Newcastle for his original term of transportation.
