28/3/1835 Windsor and Eton Express Berkshire, England: Edward Francis Sanderson, aged 22, and Thomas Reed, aged 36, were jointly indicted on the oaths of James Dudley and others with feloniously stealing at Catterham, in this county, a bay gelding, the property of William Mills. Reed persisted in a plea of guilty, and the evidence against his accomplice, an old offender, being clearly proved, the Jury returned a verdict of Guilty. The Court sentenced the prisoners to be transported for life. Thomas Reed was also onboard. Parents: William Sanderson & Virtue Maria Oliver. William Sanderson was convicted of horse stealing at the Old Bailey on 4 Apr 1836, and sentenced to be transported for Life. He arrived in Tasmania on 12 Nov 1836, aboard the "Lady Nugent. His wife, Virtue Maria Sanderson, later joined him in Tasmania, date of arrival unknown. Virtue Maria Sanderson died at Oatlands Tasmania, on 10 Jan 1852. William Sanderson Died at Oatlands, Tasmania, on 17 Sep 1866. Previous convictions: once fined 5£ for Assault, once for Pig stealing discharged. 12/9/1840: Permission to marry Mary Walker (Westmoreland 1836) approved. Mary was 37, an assigned servant. Edward was 28, an assigned servant. 5/10/1840: Married at Oatlands. Children: 13/7/1841: Mary Ann Sanderson 1/7/1842: Elizabeth - married Alexander Parker 13/12/1857, he was 22, a bricklayer, she was 16, storekeeper's daughter. Mary Walker died 23/9/1843 at Oatlands. 7/3/1844: TOL 23/8/1845: Recommended for a CP 17/6/1844: Married Mary Parker (Hindostan 1839) - she was 37, a widow, Edward was 30, a widower, labourer. 14/9/1850 The Courier, Hobart: I HEREBY CAUTION the public not to give credit to my wife, Mary Sanderson, as I will not be answerable for any debts she may contract after this date, as she has left her home. EDWARD F. SANDERSON. Oatlands, Sept. 1O, 1850. 23/6/1858: Married Ann Clark, 34, spinster, Edward was 44, a widower, shopkeeper. Children: 3/10/1861: William, d 7/10/1861, Mortification of Head, child of storekeeper. 28/6/1862: Edward Francis Sanderson died from 'Disease of the lungs' at Oatlands, he was 48, a storekeeper. Buried at Oatlands St Peter's Anglican Cemetery, with son William; later wife Ann was also buried in this plot. 30/6/1862 The Mercury, Hobart: DEATH. On the 28th instant, at his residence, Oatlands, Edward Francis Sanderson, aged 49 years. Friends are invited to meet at the residence of his father, the White Horse Inn, Oatlands, at two o'clock on Thursday next, to follow his remains. 18/1/1863: Death of Ann Sanderson, aged 39, of Diphtheria, at Oatlands.
Land grant on vellum, dated 23 August 1861, granting land by purchase in the township of OATLANDS, TASMANIA. Land situated on the corner of Marlborough Street and Boles street and cost 27 pounds. Document signed by Governor Young and is in my possession.
