Old Bailey: CHARLES SARTIN, GEORGE LOFTHOUSE, Theft > pocketpicking, 16th February 1832. Reference Number: t18320216-120 Offence: Theft > pocketpicking Verdict: Guilty; Guilty Punishment: Transportation CHARLES SARTIN and GEORGE LOFTHOUSE were indicted for stealing, on the 21st of January , 1 handkerchief, value 4s., the goods of James Chignell , from his person . JAMES CHIGNELL . I live in Gerard-street, Soho. On the 21st of January, about ten minutes to nine o'clock at night, I was in King-street, Covent-garden - a constable came up and asked if I had lost any thing from my pocket- I felt, and missed my handkerchief, which was safe half an hour before. Sartin's Defence. When the officer came back I was in the middle of Covent-garden - I was going on an errand for my grand-father, and as I walked up King-street, saw a handkerchief on the ground, and picked it up - I turned back, and saw this lad: I said I had found a handkerchief - then that gentleman and the officer came after me; I did not attempt to run away - it was in my pocket, not in my hat. SARTIN - GUILTY . Aged 18. LOFTHOUSE - GUILTY . Aged 17. Transported for Fourteen Years. George Lofthouse was also on board ‘Lord William Bentinck’. Charles was listed as being 21 years old on arrival. He was 5’ 31/4” tall, red hair, dark hazel eyes, fair complexion, stout made, single. 1832-35 Musters: Public Works 28/6/1844: TOL 27/8/1847: Married Sarah Ann Boulton (Platina 1837) he is listed as 21?? and a labourer, Sarah Ann as 23?? (Sarah Ann was listed as 21 on arrival – 10 years before). No children found. No further records of Charles found. There was a public notice in the Sydney Morning Herald 7/2/1879 from Mrs Esther Pyott, looking for her sister Sarah Ann Boulton who came from Stockport 40 years previously and supposedly married Charles "Suncen". They may have moved to NSW, but found nothing on the NSW BDM.
