Convict Notes
John Green (Lady Castlereagh 1818) and Joseph Saunders (Dromedary 1820) were the first convicts to abscond from Macquarie Harbour. They fled in March 1822, only weeks after arriving there with the first batch of prisoners. A few days later six more prisoners took off into the bush. A heavily armed search party was sent out to bring them back so an example could be made of them. Neither the hunters nor the hunted were ever heard of again. (See West.
