Manchester Mercury Lancashire, England 6 Jul 1819: On Thursday week, between twelve and one o'clock at noon, Michael Clancey and John Savage, prisoners confined in Lancaster Castle, for trial at the next Assizes, the former charged with uttering forged Bank Notes, the latter with a highway robbery, made a second attempt to escape; and, by means of three nails, together with their cloathing made into a rope, in a few moments reached the top of the outer wall; __when fortunately (for the spot chosen was out of sight of the turnkeys) they were seen by one of the debtors, who immediately gave the alarm ; and to whom much praise is due, for the very prompt manner in which he gave notice of the affair to the keeper and his servants; thereby preventing twso very depraved and desperate characters from being again let loose upon the public. John Savage was listed as 21 years old on arrival. Occupation: Plumber/glazier. John was 5'7½" tall, fair pale complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. Colonial Secretary Index: SAVAGE, John. Per "Mangles" 1824 Oct 23: Attached to the Government Domain. On return of proceedings of the Bench of Magistrates, Parramatta (Reel 6023; 4/6671 p.55) no other records found.
