William Sawyer was listed as being 24 years old on arrival in VDL. He was born on Orphew, Suffolk. Transported for 'Stealin two £1 notes. Proper name William Sayer, he worked for Mr. Mumford. Gaol Report: Bad character had been imprisoned for Felony pervious to this Conviction. William was 5'11" tall, dark brown hair, dark grey eyes, flesh mole left breast, scar thick of thumb left hand. William was married. Father and mother at Suffolk - a shoemaker. 19/1/1827 Colonial Times and Tasmanian Advertiser, Hobart: Supreme Court. Samuel Field, James Goodwin, Benjamin Stratford, William Rodd, and William Sawyer, were indicted for stealing a pig, the property of Mr. John Smith ; after a very long trial, Field and Goodwin were found guilty, and the others acquitted. 10/11/1827: Colonial conviction: Launceston - 3 years. 29/8/1829: Absconded. 6/8/1830 Colonial Times, Hobart: William Sawyer, an absentee for the last six months - sentenced three years to Macquarie Harbour. 1830-32 Musters: Transported to Macquarie Harbour. 10/5/1833: TOL 1833 Muster: Free Certificate 21/10/1833 22/10/1838: Hobart Town QS - Life. 16/5/1883: There is a death listed for a William Sawyer, died aged 84 (born 1799) at the New Town Charitable Institution.
