Convict Notes

NSW Convict Index. James Scully, per Dunvegan Castle, 1832, Conditional Pardon, 31 Dec1847, No 48/470.

MARYBOROUGH ASSIZES. THURSDAY, SEVENTH DAY, James Scully was put forward for entering the house of man named Thomson, of Ballyfin, with four others, and taking therefrom pistol, on the 1st of February last. Thomson’s wife, an interesting looking woman, proved the facts of the charge, whose evidence was corroborated by a fellow named James Dempsey, an informer who was taken with the prisoner an hour after the robbery. When asked the substance of the Whitefoot oath, he said— “To join a brother in every part he would go to: to support the Catholic cause; and to put down heresy and all land jobbers.” On being asked what he meant by heresy, he replied— All Protestants.” The reason the Blackfeet and Whitefeet could not agree is, because their correspondence differs! They are all sworn to cut down every thing. One of the signs of the Whitefeet is, the rubbing the right hand over the forehead, &c. This trial excited a deal of merriment and curiosity. His evidence was fully supported by a servant boy of Thomson’s.—Guilty. Kerry Evening Post, 28 Mar 1832.
