He was the son of Thomas Sellick and his wife, Eliza Dodsworth and was born in Exeter, Devon. His family moved to London at some point in the 1820s. He was accused of stealing once some tools, for which he was flogged, and the second time from his parents. Thomas, his father, seems to have reported this, but was unprepared for the eventual judgement against his son. While Charles was held before transportation, Thomas petitioned the Home Office to have Charles's sentence changed and so as he served his time still in England. This was refused.
