John SEWELL was convicted at York, England on 9 March 1822 for burglary. Previous conviction for stealing. Gaol report: "behaved well". Life sentence. Hulk Report: "behaved well". Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Commodore Hayes' arriving 16 Aug 1823. Family are Quakers. Father, a butcher, near Northbridge. Stated he last worked for Racon & P.... VDL: Assigned to work services. 18 Oct 1823: at Mr. Scott's- disobedience of orders & drunkeness. 25 lashes. 12 Nov 1823: as above. Further 25 lashes. 1831: at Mr.G. Meredith's - drunk. 30 lashes. 1834: at South Port. 1835: Ticket of Leave granted. 1837: Tippling in a Public House. Ticket of Leave suspended for 7 days and hard labour at Public Works. 3 Feb 1838: Conditional Pardon approved. No. 1571.
