Married Mary Ann Toll in St Joseph's Church, Hobart, in 1845; had children Margaret, John, William born Hobart 1852....Left for Victorian Goldfields Apr 1852.....Died of Bronchitis at Beechworth 1857...John is my maternal third great grandfather....




Personal details, upon arrival: Aged 23yrs; native place - Roscommon, Ireland; labourer; 5'2 1/4"; fresh, freckled complexion; brown hair; dk blue eyes; single man. 28/12/1848 at Oatlands Court: John Shanley charged of uttering a forged note with intent to defraud. Adjourned till 01/01/1849 - convicted and sentenced to 7yrs transportation. (ref. Colonial Times 02/01/1849)




John Shanley was convicted at York on 01/07/1835 for Highway Robbery - stealing money from a female person. 7 yr sentence. He stated he was innocent of the offence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Lord Lyndoch' arriving 20/08/1836. Hulk Report: orderly Ship Surgeon's Report: indifferent Assignments of service in the Colony.
