Convict Notes
After an initial theft of geese, hens and ducks and receiving a three month sentence for that crime in Antrim, William aged 15 and his older brother Hugh aged 21 were convicted of cattle theft and sentenced to 15 years, to be transported to Bermuda on the 'Bangalore' arriving in June 1848 where along with other convicts they were employed for 12 months in the construction and maintenance of the Royal Naval Dockyards. They were then sent on the 'Neptune' to The Cape of Good Hope to serve out their sentences, but the hostile resistance of Cape locals to convict transportation resulted in the Neptune being eventually forced to sail to Van Diemen's Land where they received conditional pardons. William married a Mary Mccart and became the father of 9 children, residing in the area of Geelong, Victoria.
