Elizabeth Sharman, aged 31, was capitally convicted of stealing a pocket-book containing 61 pound notes, from the coat pocket of Mr. Francis Riches, of Ashwelthorpe, farmer, about one o clock in the morning of the 18th of June last, under the following circumstances: The prosecutor first saw the prisoner on the night preceding the said 18th of June, being Wymondham Fair Day, at at public-house called the Griffin there. She was sitting with him and others taking some refreshment, when at the time in the morning first stated, he having occasion out into the yard, at the back, she followed him, and coming him, in dark passage which communicated with the street, suddenly rushed upon him, and thrusting her hand into his coat pocket, took out his pocket-book, containing the stolen, and immediately ran off and escaped before he could get any assistance. It seemed the wish of the Counsel for the prisoner to prove that the prosecutor was inebriated at the time, in order to shew his incapacity to be aware whether not any of the kind had happened, and if so, his incapability swear to the person in such a state, but this attempt failed, as the prosecutor positively deposed he was quite sober at the time, and confidently swore to the person of the prisoner. His evidence was in part corroborated by a man, named John who was in the room when the prisoner followed the prosecutor out, and he heard him call out for help, and exclaimed stop thief several times, but before he could get to the spot she escaped.
