John Sharratt was sentenced to 10 years transportation for stealing 2000lb of cotton from his employer, the East India Company. He worked as a carpenter in Melbourne before settling in Ballan. He was killed after falling from his horse in 1857. Sharratt's wife and daughter came to Victoria some time in the 1850s.
