The 1825 Journey. The ship Mariner, Captain Fotherley, arrived from Ireland with female prisoners, on Sunday evening. She left the Cove of Cork, the 12th of March, and brings 112 female prisoners, having lost only one on the passage. A few passengers also came per this opportunity. Convict Notes
James Sheehan who was detected on the morning Sunday, the 9th inst., in stealing a quantity of pigs’ heads from the stores Messrs. Milward & Co. Summer-hill, was then arraigned for this robbery, and pleaded guilty. The Judge humanely informed him, that if he catered this plea in the expectation that it would induce any remission of the punishment due to his crime, he was under mistake, as the sentence to. be passed on him would be just same as if he had been convicted after trial; he therefore advised him to re- consider the matter, and gave him the option of persevering in his former plea, or of withdrawing it if he should think proper further consideration. The Prisoner, however, declined availing himself of his Lordship’s humane offer, and persisted in his plea of guilty, which was accordingly recorded. Sentence not passed. James Sheehan was taken in the act of stealing pigs’ heads from the stores of Messrs. Milward and Co., Summerhill. He has been committed. Waterford Mail, 12 July 1826.
