Somehow, Joseph returned to England. However, the Norfolk Chronicle, 4 April 1840, reports: Walsingham Sessions were held on Friday last, .. prisoners for trial, amongst whom were ... Joseph Shepherd was found guilty of stealing quantity of barley in the straw, the property of Thos. Lake, of Walsingham. The prisoner had been transported, and a short time since had been tried with his  father for a similar offence, when the father was transported. The Court now sentenced him to 15 years' transportation.

At the Adjourned Sessions held at Holt on Friday, the 8th inst.... the following prisoners (23 in number) were tried: ... Joseph Shepheard, convicted of stealing hay from the field barn yard of Mr. Wordingham, of Barsham, being an old offender, was sentenced to be transported for seven years. Norfolk Chronicle, 23 May 1829.
