Family connections for James (Shepherd) may be: Amendment made August 2025. SHEPHERD James (Shephard) was born about 1762. He arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 7 1791 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship MATILDA according to Smees records. He married Ann (Thorne) on 5 2 1795 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He was Free by Servitude by 1796. James (Shepherd) does not have an entry on this Website as yet-added by me; although a James (Sherrard ACTIVE 1791 same Fleet) is found-he is consistantly referred to as (Sherrard)-but died in 1822 after last child shown here. Ann (Thorne) was born about 1758 & became a servant to gunsmith Phillip (Bond). She was tried for grand larceny for stealing, on 27 10 1792, table spoons etc of Philip (Bond) at Old Bailey on 31 10 1792, sentenced to 7years, held at London Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 17 10 1794 after a voyage of 8.5months on SURPRISE; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate. She died as emancipist on 7 4 1806 age48. [Some details taken from this Website] James (Shephard) & Ann (Thorne) produced 4children: 1.James (Shepha/erd) was born on 5 5 1796 & baptised on 4 6 1796 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He married Harriet (Nelson her second marriage) on 20 2 1821 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. He worked in Tahiti before joining the Church Missionary Society in New Zealand. He died on 1 10 1882 age86. ..Harrie/ot (Nelson) was born on 30 12 1800 & baptised on 8 2 1801 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. In 1800-2 she was recorded living with her parents on his grant of 15acres. In 1806 she was recorded with her parents. It may be she who was recorded in 1814 as living with her parents at Liverpool. She married firstly Charles (Hern/sforth) on 12 2 1818 at St Lukes CofE Liverpool. She died on 9 12 1793 (illogical) or 31 3 1877 age76, mother of 3children. ..Details of Harrie/ot (Nelson)s family are given in entry for Isaac (Nelson ALBERMARLE 1791) on this Website. ..James (Shepha/erd) & Harriet (Nelson) produced 2children: ..1.Harriet (Shepherd) was born on 24 6 1825 at Parramatta & baptised on 26 6 1825 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. ..2.Robert (Shepherd) .. 2.Ann (Shephard) was born on 2 10 1797 & baptised on 21 10 1797 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She was living at Kissing Point when she married at age16 William (Henry age63 his second relationship) with whom she moved to Tahiti & produced 10children. She died on 28 7 1882 age84. ..William (Henry), son of George and Sarah, was born on 21 7 1770 at Sligo Ireland & became a preacher in Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion Cambridgeshire &missionary of the (London) Missionary Society. He studied at Trinity College Dublin Ireland; & later embraced Methodism & the Congregationalist denomination. He married firstly Sarah (Mabon) of Dublin in Ireland. In August 1796 he sailed to South Seas on DUFF with his family-to Tahiti. He arrived in Sydney NSW as a missionary with his family in May 1798 on NAUTILUS. He apparantly returned to UK with his family; however, 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' advises the family returned to Tahiti in October 1799. He is recorded as arriving in Australia again with his family in 1800s (or February 1810 seeking refuge from Tahiti) on NAUTILUS to minister at Kissing Point. He was made Justice of the Peace for Pacific Islands in 1811 & returned again to Tahiti. She died in 1873 ageabout78. 4.Isaac (Shepha/erd) was born in 1800. He had a relationship with Elizabeth (Bond). He worked in the Tahitian religious Mission.
