Offence; Stealing a Scythe A scythe is an agricultural hand-tool for mowing grass or harvesting crops. It was historically used to cut down or reap edible grains before they underwent the process of threshing. Charles Shepherd at Sorell, per Lotus, F.S., for larceny, sentenced to 6 months, native place-Ireland, trade-labourer, age 63 yrs, 5 feet 5 inches high, last conviction-9th Sept 1871, resides at Richmond. Tasmania Police Gazette, 22nd Sept 1871, p153. Prisoner discharged from Gaol, Hobart or Launceston on the week ending 16 & 20 March 1872. From Sorell, Charles Shepherd, per Lotus, F.S., tried at Sorell on 16 Sept 1871, for larceny, served 6 months, native of Ireland, 63 yrs, 5 feet 5 inches high, inclined to grey hair.
