John Sherwood request pardon - transcribed To his Excellency Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of his Majesties Territories of New South Wales Timothy Sheweth, Your petitioner came in the ship Glatton and was tried at Bedford and received penance of transportation for life. That your petitioner lands as a servant for Mr Dight for better than Nine years in which time your petitioner conducted himself in that time as a faithful servant. In consideration of your petitioners good character his Honour John F? thought pertinent to grant your petitioner an emancipation which your petitioner humbly prayath your excellency to ? and petitioners wife. My grandmother was called Shearwood, but Sherwood seems to be the original spelling. Her father was Henry, whose father was Thomas, whose father was John the sheep stealing convict. Henry was crushed by an accident with his wagon and took several days to die. He carted wool.
Thankyou, this man is my ancestor. His descendant Reta Shearwood married my grandfather Norman C Johnson and they became renowned Merino sheep breeders in Central West NSW...so the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

John Sherwood was convicted with John Crawley at Bedford Assizes on 16 July 1801.
John, along with John Crawley and William Pepper were tried and convicted in Bedford on 6th August 1801 of sheep stealing, they were all sentenced to death by hanging. The sentences on Sherwood and Crawley were commuted to transportation for life, but Pepper was hanged on 1st August 1801. Crawley and Sherwood were put aboard the hulks at Woolwich on the Thames on 7th January 1802. After eight months in the hulks they were transfered to their transportation vessel. Left England on 23rd September 1802. Ship:- the 'Glatton' sailed with 271 male and 130 female convicts on board of which 9 males and 5 females died during the voyage. Arrived on 11th March 1803. On arrival he was assigned to Thomas Dight at Richmond. The 1811 Census shows John Sherwood living with convict Anne Lane ('Speke I' 1808), they had 7 children between 1812-1826. After receiving his Conditional Pardon on 31st January 1815, John commenced farming on rented land as the tenant of Mrs Wood of Sydney farming 20 acres in the Windsor district, and then in 1824 at North Richmond, renting 28 acres from Archibald Bell of Belmont. before purchasing a 60 acre property at Kurrajong Heights which he called Gardenwood Hill. John Sherwood died May 30th, 1850 in Kurrajong NSW at the age of 74 and was buried at St Peters Anglican Church Richmond. Anne died November 13th 1858 at Kurrajong Heights at the age of 70 and was also buried at St Peters . Her grave can still be located there.

In the colony, John 'married' Ann Lane (Convict, 1808, "Speke") - no record of marriage registration. The couple were together for a long period and had at least 7 children, born between 1812 and 1826.
