George Shipley was born in 1811 at Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. He was a baker by trade. In 1837 George was convicted and sentenced to "life" in Tasmania. His crime had been that he hired a pony and trap and tried to sell it. He arrived in Tasmania in 1838 and did "hard labour" for years. He eventually got a ticket of leave and settled in Hobart where he became a boarding house keeper. He died at Hobart in 1885.
