14th March 1833 received 25 Lashes for insolence.1st July 1833 received 12 Lashes for disobedience. 7th September 1833 Insolence and neglect of duty sentenced to Hard Labour. 16th December 'suspicion' of violent assault and removed to Port Arthur. see Con31-1-39 p.206


1835, 2 February: Joseph SHARLAND, 19, labourer, convict #1541, was buried at Port Arthur in the Wesleyan Church cemetery (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD34-1-1p185j2k).


CRIME: According to prison hulk records, Joseph SHORLAND, a groom, was 17 when he was convicted for assault and stealing from the person 5 pounds, 21 sovereigns and a silver watch. His co-accused - William Walker, 19, and James Haynes, 20 - were also sentenced to transportation for life. All three were admitted to the prison hulk Justitia, moored at Woolwich, on 27 January 1832. James HAYNES, a labourer, and William Walker, a silversmith, were sent from the Justitia on 10 February 1832 for transportation aboard the KS Forbes. Joseph SHORLAND was sent from the Justitia for transportation on 20 March 1832 (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).




Joseph Shorland was convicted at Bristol on 2/1/1832 for Highway Robbery. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'England', arriving 19/07/1832. Aged 19yrs; single man. Assigned in Colony: 1833 Martin; 1834 Shalles - suspicion of assault and robbery. Removed to Port Arthur Penal settlement. Died Port Arthur 02/02/1835.
