Convict Notes

Family connections for Sophia (Simmonds) are: SIMMONDS Sophia (Simmonds) was born about 1785. She was tried at Southampton Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 4 1806 after a voyage of 9.5months on WILLIAM PITT. She was witness to burglary trial in November 1808 while perhaps in her first relationship with Daniel (Gilmore)-perhaps involved in the crime. She married secondly George (Tyrrel/l) farmer on 6 11 1810 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She is recorded in 1828 with her husband. She died on 20 9 1837 age52 mother of no known children. [Some details taken from this Website] George (Tyrrel/l) was born on 22 2 1790 & baptised on 7 3 1790 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. Perhaps it was he who was frightened in January 1810 at Kissing Point by a lightning strike which crippled his mother. He was a farmer in 1810. He is recorded in 1828 with his wife. He died on 14 5 1837 age47. Family details for George (Tyrrell) are shown in entry for William (Tyrrell ALEXANDER 1787) on this Website. Reference: Craig James Smee 'Births and Baptisms Marriages and Defacto Relationships Deaths and Burials New South Wales 1788-1830' ..a complete listing from church & other records in the early colony.

During November 1808, Sophia was called as a witness in a burglary trial, she was evidently cohabiting with one Daniel Gilmore at the time and he had been involved in the robbery. On November 6th 1810, Sophia married George Tyrrell at St Phillips, Sydney. George Tyrrell was the son of First Fleet couple; William Tyrrell (Convict, Alexander, 1788) and Ann Ward (Convict, Lady Penrhyn, 1788). I have been unable to locate any children from this union. Indeed in the 1828 Census, 18 years after the marriage the couple are listed, he 39 and she 43, at the bottom of page 375. No family listed.
