Nottingham Assizes.—....—Sentence of death was recorded against the following nine prisoners', who were severally convicted viz. Wm. Braley alias Simpson, for stealing (on the 16th of February) from the shop of Mr. John Hall, of Newark, 200 yards of printed calico, and other goods; ... Stamford Mercury, 17 March 1826. On Tuesday last the following seven convicts were removed from the Gaol under the care of Mr Cross and proper assistants to be put on board the Retribution bulk at Sheerness viz: … and William Simpson all under sentence of transportation for the term of their natural lives Nottingham Journal, 6 May 1826. William Simpson was listed as 19 years old on arrival. Native Place: Manchester. William could read, was single, 5'3½" tall, fresh ruddy complexion, brown hair, light hazel eyes, first finger of the left hand nail pinched. 1828 Census: 24 years old, a tailor, assigned to William Ogilvie at Merton. 1829: Married Ellen Partridge (1807-1854) at the Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle. They had 6 children. (27/12/1854: Death of Ellen Simpson, wife of William Simpson of the Plough Inn on 19th December. Died aged 47 after a long and painful illness of two months leaving a large family). 282/3/1835: TOL, Merton. 1837: TOL, Patrick Plains 11/6/1842: A storekeeper at Jerry's Plains 13/1/1844: Granted a hawker's license - Hunter District. 26/4/1848: Granted publican's license for the Plough Inn. (new License). 28/4/1849: Granted publican's license for the Plough Inn, Jerry's Plains. 23/4/1853: Granted publican's license for the Plough Inn. 23/8/1854: Singleton - Proprietors of a public house at Jerry's Plains. Found not guilty of stealing a bank cheque, whistle, knife and money belonging to Henry Jackson. 22/1/1858: William Simpson died suddenly, aged 51, leaving a fine family of 8 children to mourn their loss.
