Link to record for transportation in 1833 - https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/sinkler/elisha/8866 Elisha/Elijah SINKLER/HEBDEN was convicted at Leeds, Yorkshire on 4 March 1843 for 'returning from transportation'. He stated that he was taken up on a charge of poaching and while in prison a Constable swore that he was a returned convict. He believed he had been mistaken for his cousin Elijiah who had been transported. (John SINKLER was not transported until 1844) This man was transported to Australia per the ship 'Maitland' arriving 8 Feb 1844. Further research warranted to compare records to see if it is one and same person or as he stated, a cousin. 1844 details: aged 40 yrs; 5'7" height; hatter by trade; married man, widowed, 2 children; sallow complexion; dark hair; dark brown eyes. Native place of birth: nr Rippon, Yorkshire, England. Brother: Richard Sister: Elizabeth Stationed on Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales). 30 months Probation Period. 20 Jan 1847, at Norfolk Island - charged with having a bottle of tea concealed. 2 mths hard labour, in chains. Transferred to Van Diemen's Land per the ship 'Pestongee Bomangee April 1847. 22 Oct 1849, assigned to Mr. Goldie, Richmond, Van Diemen's Land - out after hours. 4 days solitary. 4 April 1854: Ticket of Leave status granted. 22 April 1856: Conditional Pardon approved.




This is the same Elisha Sinkler who arrived per Lord Lyndoch in 1833. He managed to escape and made it back to Yorkshire, only to be arrested again and sent back to NSW.
