I think the above information about John Slater being a machine breaker is incorrect, and refers to another person. This John Slater was younger. John Slater, E. Reeves, and J. Law, charged with breaking open the dwelling house of T. Morris, of Thorpe, stealing two flitches of bacon, &c. ; Leicester Chronicle, 21 March 1818. ASSIZE INTELLIGENCE. LEICESTER— Sentences of the Prisoners. Condemned to Death. — … John Slater, J. Law, and Edward Reeves, for stealing from T. Morris, of Thorpe—… Northampton Mercury, 11 April 1818. Edward Reeves, for the same offence, was also on the Hadlow.

LEICESTER ASSIZES. These assizes terminated yesterday, after the dispatch of an unprecedented quantity of business. Of the prisoners in the County Gaol, were condemned to death, and 9 of them are left for execution, including 7 Luddites. The two other prisoners left to suffer, are convicted of having, in company with several other persons, robbed the Walton carrier of sundry bank notes, &c.—The following are the particulars of the gaol delivery:- Condemned aged 32, William Withers, aged 33, William Towle, aged 22, John Amos, aged 30, John Crowder, aged 40, Joshua Mitchel, aged aged 29, James Watson, aged 21, and John Clarke, aged 28, for having, on the night of the 20th of June last, assembled with other persons at Loughborough in disturbance of the peace, and unlawfully demolished several laceframes, the property of John Heathcote and John Boden, in their factory there; and also for having then and there shot at, or been aiding and assisting in shooting at, John Asher, Eliz. Silvester, and Mrs. Rushworth, with intent to kill or do them some bodily harm. — Wm. Burton, aged 20, and John Blackburn, aged 22, charged with the same offence, were admitted evidence; Sam. Caldwell, aged 20, was remanded till the next assizes; and John Slater, aged 37, also for the same offence, was sentenced to be transported for life. Stamford Mercury, 4 April 1817. The seven were all hanged in April.
