The sentence of transportation left Samuel’s family nearly destitute. Samuel and Elizabeth's children were as follows: - 1. Mary Ann Slee Born 1833 in Wellington, Somerset. Married Williiam Davey. 2. Elizabeth Slee (1835-1901) Born in Uffculme, Devon. Married Jabez (Thomas) Payne, 1 September 1860 at St. Peters Church Tiverton, They had 9 children. 3. William Slee (1838-1912) Born in Uffculme, Devon, Married Emma Jane Allen, 1880 in Tiverton. 4. John Slee (1840-1903) Born in Uffculme, Devon. Married 1864 to Mary Ann Greenslade at Cheriton, Devon, They had six children. 5. Thomas Slee (1843-1929) Born in Uffculme, Devon. An agricultural labourer, he married Emma Isaac and they had seven children. Tom died at Street Ashton, Warwickshire, in 1929. 6. Samuel Slee (1847-1850) Born 6 months after Samuel’s conviction, Samuel Jnr died 1850. Samuel's wife, Elizabeth Slee (nee Baker), is on the 1851 Census as ‘Widow’, and on the 1861 Census as ‘Married’, but her surname is still Slee on both. The 1861 Census shows Elizabeth as ‘Head of the Household’ and her son William, and below them is Thomas Payne (Jabez), his wife Elizabeth Payne nee Slee, and their son Samuel William Payne (Great Grandfather of Bernard Ramsay).
Born at and resident of Uffculme, Devon. Married with six children. Convicted 20 Oct 1846 at Exeter for stealing three ducks, value sixpence each, sentence 10 years. Transported 1847 to Gibraltar, then to Hobart on Cornwall, arriving 11 June 1851. Pardoned 7 Feb 1854. Married (aged 44) on 17 July 1855 at Hobart to Charlotte Beecher (aged 38), born Meath Ireland, mother of two boys, convicted 18 Oct 1852 at Dublin for stealing boots, sentence seven years, arrived Hobart 24 Feb 1853 on Midlothian, pardoned 7 Nov 1854. Neither Samuel nor Charlotte were reunited with their children, and had none together. Both died at Hobart, Samuel in 1868 and Charlotte in 1882.
