National Archives. ADM 101/67/2/1 Diary of the convict ship Shipley for 19 November 1816 to 3 May 1817 by George Clayton, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the ship was employed in carrying convicts, soldiers and passengers from England to New South Wales. Folio 8: 14 January 1817: John Sly, convict, aged 27 complains of cough, hoarseness and general uneasiness. Folio 9: 21 January 1817: Discharged cured John Sly.

Wiltshire Assizes. Monday, the Assizes commenced at Salisbury, ….John Herbert and John Sly were found guilty of a burglary in the house of John Brown, in Pewsham Forest, on the 25th of June last. Death. Hampshire Chronicle, 5 Aug 1816 Prison Hulk Record, HO 9-8-4 p 34. Received from New Sarum (6 prisoners) Oct 9th 1816. John Sly, age 27, convicted at New Sarum 27 July 1816, for a felony, sentenced to transportation for life. NSW, 3 Dec 1816.
