Joseph Snart was born in Deeping Fen England in 1801 and was unmarried and a labourer or house carpenter, when at the age of 26, he and George Lammaman were convicted at the Holland Quarter Sessions for stealing wallow brasses from Mills in Deeping Fen. He was sentenced to be transported to Australia for 7 years and left Portsmouth England on 7/11/1827 on the ship “Marmion” which sailed via the Cape of Good Hope to arrive in Hobart on 6/3/1828. His real name is Joseph Snart, but When he arrived in Hobart he was mistakenly recorded as Joseph Smart, He eventually married Harriet Stammers in Hobart and had daughter Harriet Amelia Smart 25/07/1834
