James Smiles orriginally married Mary Errington 10 April 1813 in Longbenton, Northumberland, England. They had a son William, Christened 25 July, 1813 Longbenton, England. The family Lore goes that Mary committed a 'crime' to be able to join James in Australia, but went under her maiden name and they remaried in Australia in 1818.William must have been looked after by family and he came out around 1837-1842. He ended up settling in Tumut after marrying in Liverpool and having a few children.




James was tried and convicted at the Northumberland Assizes, Newcastle on a charge of burglary on 11th August 1814 and was sentenced to transportation for life. Left England on 20th April 1815. Ship:- the 'Baring' sailed with 300 male convicts on board of which 2 died during the voyage. Arrived on 7th September 1815. In the colony, James married convict Mary Errington ('Friendship' 1818) on 20th April 1818 at Liverpool, they had 5 children between 1818 and 1826. He was appointed constable at Liverpool on 15th January 1823 and resigned on 22nd October of the same year. He received a pardon on 23rd September 1834. James died in 1851 age 64.
