1861, 31 May: A charge of cattle stealing, at Deloraine, brought against him in the court at Launceston, was "ignored" (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/AB693-1-1$init=AB693-1-1_071). 1869: Ellen Smillie died, according to family researchers' records. 1871: Stewart Smillie married Annie Pike, according to family researchers' records. 1871, 30 January: He was tried at Westbury on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences and sentenced to 3 months' jail. The sentence was remitted (see Tasmania, Reports of Crime, 1861-1883; 1871). This record incorrectly lists him as 48 years old (rather than 58). 1885, 15 December: Stewart Smillie died at Adelaide, SA (see Australia Death Index, 1787-1985).


1840, 2 June: Stewart Smillie was granted a Ticket of Leave (see Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899; Register; Alphabetical convict conduct registers - Northern Tasmania Q to Y, 1822-1844). Some time after receiving his ToL, an entry in the above record reads: "Attempting to practice a deception on an unmarried female, pretending to be an unmarried man, admonished". 1841, 26 May: He received his Free Certificate No.393 at Launceston (see Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899; Pardons, Leave, Discharge; Register of certificates of freedom granted, 1841-1844). 1843, 11 March: Eliza Smillie died (Reg. no.826, Launceston). 1843, 17 October: Stewart Smillie, 26 and a gardener, married Ellen Beven, 17 and a spinster, in St Joseph's Catholic Church at Launceston (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-3p159j2k). 1845, 29 May: He is listed as FS, Free by Servitude (see Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899; Register; Alphabetical convict conduct registers - Northern Tasmania Q to Y, 1822-1844).


1834: On arrival in VDL, Stewart Smillie was 19, and listed on his description record as a bookbinder from Edinburgh. He was 5'11" tall with a dark complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. 1837, 8 August: Stewart Smillie, per Southworth, and Eliza Sidnem (Sydenham), per Edward, sought and were granted permission to marry, at Launceston (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD36-1-3p107j2k). 1837, 13 September: The couple married at Launceston (Reg. no.3890).
