Text type Trial account Defendants ANN SMITH Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 4th March 1839 Reference Number t18390304-918 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 918. ANN SMITH was indicted for stealing, on the 14th of February, 1 pair of boots, value 4s., the goods of Sophia Brooks. SOPHIA BROOKS , I am a widow, and keep a hosier's shop is Tottenham Court-road. On the 14th of February, between eight and nine o'clock, the prisoner came to try on some boots—I showed her two or three pain—she said they would not fit her—she said if she had the shoehorn she could get the last pair on—while I was getting the horn I saw her place one pair under her arm—she then pointed to another pair—while I was getting them she put the other boots under her clothes—she returned the last pair I had given her, and said they would not do—I then said she had another pair—she said she had not, that she had given them to my little girl, who had hung them up—I sent for an officer, who found them on her. WILLIAM SELF . I am a policeman. I was called in, and found these, boots under the prisoner's clothes. (Property produced and sworn to.) GUILTY .* Aged 20.— Transported for Seven Years.
