Family connections for Elizabeth (Smith) are: SMITH Elizabeth (Smith) was born about 1749. She had a first relationship with ??? (Carr). As Elizabeth (Smith/Carr) she was tried w/1other, Thomas (???), for theft of a watch etc of George (Jones), on 2 6 1787, at Old Bailey on 11 7 1787, sentenced to 7years, held for 2years probably at London/Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 3 6 1790 after a voyage of 12months on Fleet ship LADY JULIANA-a ship with 228females who easily entertained the whole crew & also sailors at Teneriffe stopover. On 31 7 1790 she was sent to Norfolk Island on SURPRISE. She was assigned to William (Boggis) Free by Servitude after March 1791 & had a second relationship with him on Norfolk Island & produced 2children. She is recorded in 1795 as on stores on Norfolk Island. She left Norfolk Island in February 1805 or in 1806 & is recorded in 1806 & 1811 as Free by Servitude & single. Noted that another Elizabeth (Smith) was transported on LADY JULIANA & probably it is she who had relationships with James (Grace) convict from FRIENDSHIP 1788 & Samuel (Free) convict from FRIENDSHIP 1788.] William (Boggis) became a sailor. He arrived in Australia as a convict in 1788 after a voyage of 12months on First Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH. [Noted that a Lydia/Lidia/Letitia (Mu/onro/e/w) was nearly raped at age about19 by a William (Boggis) with assistance of John (Owen) on 12 9 1788, being saved by Donald (Gordon).] He arrived on Norfolk Island on 17 3 1790. He is recorded as Free by Servitude in 1791 & was assigned convict Elizabeth (Smith) before March 1791 on Norfolk Island. He is recorded in 1794 as earlier being a sailor. He left Norfolk Island in October 1796 to Sydney, relinquishing his land to the Government. William (Boggis) does not have an entry on this Website as yet-added by me.. Tried and convicted at the Old Bailey on 11th July 1787 for stealing 1 metal watch, 1 pair of stone knee buckles, 1 silk handkerchief, and 1 crown piece, she was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Elizabeth spent two years in prison waiting to be assigned to a ship, and because she was sentenced in a county goal her irons would have been riveted not locked and would have to have been knocked off. Left England on 29th July 1789. Ship:- the 'Lady Juliana' sailed with 266 female convicts on board of which 5 died during the voyage. Arrived on 3rd June 1790. On 31st July 1790 Elizabeth was sent to Norfolk Island on the Surprise. Sometime after March 1791 she was assigned to freed convict William Boggis ('Scarborough' 1788), and on 3rd February 1792 Elizabeth and William had a daughter Elizabeth (their only child). Because of crop failures, in 1795, Elizabeth and her daughter were on stores. Because of this William could not legally leave the island. Between 1797 and 1801 William left Norfolk Island (after 1802 he disappears from the records) His farm went back to the government. Elizabeth Jnr was placed in the orphanage but by 1802 she was at the Female Orphanage School in Sydney Elizabeth Jnr at the age of 14 married Charles Tompson Jnr on 8th June 1806 Elizabeth Snr left Norfolk Island in 1806 In the musters of 1806 and 1811 she is listed as Elizabeth Smith a freed convict living alone. In the muster of 1814 she is listed as widowed either because she had word her legal spouse had died or she was recognised as William Boggis' deserted de facto wife She died aged 68 on 21st August 1820 and was buried in the Sydney Burial Ground in the Tompson plot next to her infant grandson Fredrick as Elizabeth Boggis. When her daughter Elizabeth died on 19th March 1822 she was buried next to her.
