In 1824, Elizabeth once again married, this time to John Hawkins (Convict, 1806, "Fortune"). They are recorded in the 1828 Census: Page 184... [Ref H1005] Hawkins, John, 55, conditional pardon, Fortune, 1806, life, Protestant, wheelwright, Richmond. [Ref H1006] Hawkins, Elizabeth, 56, conditional pardon, Speedy, 1803, 7 years, protestant.




In the colony, Elizabeth had a defacto relationship with William Keefe (Convict, 1798, "Barwell") they had a daughter, Mary, born about 1810. Then on 16th February 1807 at Parramatta, she married Thomas Tailby (Convict, 1792, "Royal Admiral"). They had two children but then Thomas died in 1823. Elizabeth is recorded in the 1825 Census: Smith, Elizabeth, free by servitude, Speedy, 1800, 7 years, widow, Richmond. Tailby, Thomas, free by servitude, Royal Admiral, 1800, 7 years, DEAD 18th May 1823 Richmond. Tailby, Thomas, 16, born in the colony, employed by John Bowman, Richmond.




Old Bailey Trial 4th July 1798: (www.oldbaileyonline.org) t17980704-28 ELIZABETH SMITH was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 8th of June, two guineas and three shillings, in monies numbered , the property of King George. KING GEORGE sworn. - I was very much in liquor, I went home with the prisoner, I went to bed with her, and when I awaked in the morning, I saw her with her hand in my breeches pocket; there was a knife lying upon the table, and she took that up, and said, she would run it into me. Prisoner's defence. I saw none of his money, except half-a-crown that he gave me to sleep with me. Q. How much money had you? - A. Two guineas and three shillings, besides the half-crown that I gave her. GUILTY (Aged 27.) Transported for seven years. Tried by the second Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Justice LAWRENCE.
