Crime: Uttering forged Bank of England notes. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Annotated (Outcome): Nil. Petitioner(s): Friends of Elizabeth Smith, the prisoner. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Her penitence; her first offence; her friends will take her into their care if she is liberated; young age; pleaded guilty to more minor offence of being in possession of forged notes. Other papers: An unsigned letter from her friends accompanying the petition. Additional Information: Prisoner held in Newgate Gaol.
Hobart Town Gazette, 15 Sept 1827 List of Runaways 51. Smith, Elizabeth, 5 ft. 4. brown hair, blue eyes, aged 26, a sempstress, tried at the Old Bailey June 1821, 14 years, born at London, per Mary Ann, absconded from the service of G. C. Clarke at Hobart-town in May last. Same reward. (£2).
Hobart Town Gazette, 4 Mar 1825 Absconded prisoners Elizabeth Smith, 57, 5 ft. 4 in. light brown hair, blue eyes, 23 years of age, tried at London June 1821, sentence 14 years, native place London, arrived at this Colony per Mary Ann 1822, formerly in the service of Mr. Peevor, Coal River, held a ticket of leave which she forfeited, absconded from Hobart Town Feb. 1824. — £2 Reward.
