Henry Smith, a little ruffian boy, about twelve years of age, accused of theft, aggravated his being habit and repute thief, was then put to the bar, and pleaded not guilty. A very short trial established his guilt the satisfaction of the jury and he was sentenced to fourteen years’ transportation. Edinburgh Evening Courant, 1 March 1832. -------------------------------------------------- Hulk Records. HO-9-2_4 page 22/40. Euryalus. Two received from Edinburgh, 5 April 1832. Henry Smith, age 11, Offence: Theft, tried at Edinburgh, 27 Feb 1832, 14 years, VDL, Moffatt, 25 Nov 1833. --------------------------------------------------- The prison hulk, the Euryalus, an ex-frigate of the Trafalgar fleet, was moored at Chatham. Over the twenty years that this hulk serviced juveniles, about 2,500 boys of fourteen and under passed through. There were also considerable numbers of older boys both in the juvenile hulk and distributed among the other hulks. From the Euryalus, boys were transported both to New South Wales and to Van Diemen’s Land. ----------------------------------------------------- Tasmanian Conduct Record. https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-40$init=CON31-1-40p68 Henry Smith. Stated this offence, picking a woman’s pocket, once for 2 handkerchiefs, 10 days, again 30 days twice for picking pockets. Surgeon’s report, behaved well. Several incidents recorded. Free certificate, 1846.
