Convict Notes


1831, 24 October: James Smith was convicted for stealing wearing apparel - a shirt (14 years). He had two previous convictions, one for stealing a spirits bottle (3 months) and one for vagrancy (3 months). 1832: His Conduct Report describes his behaviour during to voyage to VDL: "Gross insubordination ... in April to wit on the 4th, 5th and 6th and conspiring to take the vessel and inducing others to join in the same". For this he received an extra 2 years' sentence and was sent to Port Arthur. On arrival in VDL, he was 23 and single. 1839, 19 December: James Smith received a Ticket of Leave for the Richmond District. 1839, 20 December: He left his master's employment and lost his ToL for absconding.
