The Sep 1808 102nd Reg. Description book indicates a birth year c1778 in Spaine Essex. In 1808 he was 5'8" tall, fair Complexion, hazel eyes, Sandy hair & thin face.

On 4th December 1797 he enlisted in the New South Wales Corps and in 1803 he was sent to serve in Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania), later returning to N.S.W. where on 6th April 1810 he was honourably discharged from the Corps. Jeremiah & Sophia had 10 children between 1812-1835.

In the colony, Jeremiah married Sophie Akers, September 23rd 1811 at Parramatta. Jerremiah Smith of the parish of St John Parramatta and Sophia Acres of ditto were married in this church by banns this twenty third day of September in the year one thousand eight hundred and eleven by me Samuel Marsden. Jeremiah and Sophia both made their X mark in the register in the presence of John Walby and Ann Acres who both also made their X marks. Sophia was born in the colony in 1895, the daughter of Thomas Akers (First Fleet Convict, Charlotte, 1788) and Ann Hinchley (Third Fleet Convict, Mary Ann, 1791).
