John SMITH (proper name William Turrell)was convicted at Clerkenwell, Middlesex, London on 11 March 1845 for stealing a case of surgical instruments. Previously served 3 months for picking pockets. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Marion' 1845. Aged 21yrs; a carpenter; 5'6 1/2"; Protestant; can read & write; single man. Native place of birth: St. Andrews Street, Holborn. Brother - Henry, at sea. Sister - Mary VDL: 12 mths Probation Period. Station Gang: Rocky Hills Various assignments, including Sorell, New Norfolk, Launceston, East Tamar. 19 March 1850: Ticket of Leave granted. 15 March 1852: Free Certificate issued.
