Convict Notes
Wife was born Catherine Connolly Daughter of James and Honor Connelly, Catherine was from County Roscommon, Ireland. She was unable to read or write. Catherine married Patrick McAniney. The couple sailed for Sydney in the Lady Clarke in 1841. Arr Sydney on 26 Dec 1841.Passengers included 58 natives of Roscommon. Maltreatment of earlier Irish migrants — especially single women — prompted Caroline Chisolm to establish a Female Immigrants Home in Sydney. The next year Chisolm worked hard to promote opportunities in the interior for migrants. Her work may have paved the way for Catherine’s eventual arrival at the Murray where she married Joseph who was 25 years older than her. Unknown what haooenned to first husband Patrick. (Problem is McAniney has many spelling variants.)
Was sent to the prison hulk Bellephoron on 30 Sep 1820 (recorded as Charles or Joseph Smith). Tranferred to the Speke at Sheerness on 9 Dec 1820. Contrary to the indent, Speke probably did not leave Sheerness until 22 Dec. Cleared out of Portsmouth around 24 Dec 1820.
Joseph Smith – Timeline 1796 Born, London (From Old Bailey records) 13 Sep 1820 Tried at Old Bailey for assaulting Henry Stocks (millwright, Bethnal Green) in Brick Lane, Bethnal Green on 30 Jul 1820 Guilty of pick pocket of one watch, value 20 s., and one chain. Sentence: transportation for Life. Old Bailey Online reference: 118200918-128 12 Dec 1820 Departed Speke 2 18 May 1821 Arrived Port Jackson 5 Oct 1829 "Ticket of Leave" granted. No 29/799. Must remain in "Goulburn Plains" (ie Goulburn) area. Nickname "Boro Joe" suggests he lived near the village of Boro, or Boro Creek, near Tarago just south of Goulburn. 31 Dec 1836 Conditional pardon. Notified in New South Wales Government Gazette, Wednesday 1 November 1837 (No.301), page 821 . 1838, 1839 An overseer of convict shepherds at "Wambrook." A sheep station owned by Messrs Kirsopp and Dutton, in the "Maneroo" (now “Monaro”) district.Joseph made various depositions to the Queanbeyan Court of Petty sessions re delinquent convict workers (1838/39). Early 1840s In Riverina at Morebringer (now Howlong) “Old Time Memories” Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard, Friday 28 September 1917, page 5 1844 Married Catherine Connolly. They had around 10 children in Urana. Evidence of formal marriage is questionable. 1844-1846 Smith & O'Neill licensed to run sheep on salt bush crown lands - contested by (ex)friend Patrick Brennan. Depasturing licenses 1850 to around 1877 Smith and O’Neill leased "Urana Station" (formerly "Mooromona") could hold 10,000 sheep. Woolshed, yards & huts. Lease contested 1850.
