The story that Joseph Smith had a relationship with a Mary Darkinjung (Aboriginal) is a myth. A female descendant of Elizabeth Smith b 1799 (who is supposed to descend from Mary) has a Haplogroup H1bb, common in england and known to be Romani, Elizabeths descendants show European Roma in their ethnicity, and from extensive searching of matches from people descended from Joseph Smith and from people descended from Elizabeth, there is DNA connection.

He was tried for stealing shirts etc, on 1 4 1788, of Elizabeth (Landame) at Old Bailey on 2 4 1788 (quick justice), sentenced to 7years, held probably at London or Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship NEPTUNE; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate; he was Protestant. Taking a cue from this Website-he had a first relationship with Mary (Darkinjung). In May 1797 he was granted 60acres. She had a first relationship (1of4) with William (Morrison) sailor on the ship & produced 1child. She had a second relationship with William (Smith) & produce 2children. She had a third relationship (3of4) with Patrick (Shannon his first relationship) & produced 1child. She was Free by Servitude by 1799. She is recorded in 1828 with her husband at Portland Head. She died on 20 9 1850 age82 mother of 7known children & was buried at MacDonald River Hawkesbury. Tried and convicted at the Old Bailey on 2nd April 1788 for stealing, on the 1st of April, 2 linen shirts, 2 linen neck handkerchiefs, 3 pair of cotton stockings, and 1 linen waistcoat, the property of Elizabeth Landame , sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Left England on 18th January 1790. Ship:- the 'Neptune' sailed with 436 male and 78 female convicts on board of which 147 males and 11 females died during the voyage, the worst death rate of all the transportation period, earming the ship the nickname 'the death ship'. The master and surgeon were both charged with neglect of duty but no punishment was passed. Arrived on 28th June 1790. Married convict Margaret Holmes ('Mary Ann' 1791) on 4th October 1812 at Windsor, they had 3 children between 1804-1811. Old Bailey Trial Transcription. Reference Number: t17880402-54 306. JOSEPH SMITH was indicted for stealing, on the 1st of April , two linen shirts, value 3 s. two linen neck handkerchiefs, value 6 d. three pair of cotton stockings, value 1 s. one linen waistcoat, value 1 s. the property of Elizabeth Landame . The prisoner was taken with the things upon him. GUILTY . Transported for seven years . Tried by the second Middlesex Jury before Mr. Baron HOTHAM .
