Family connections for Margaret (Smith) are: SMITH ??? (Smith) produced perhaps 2children: 1.Anna Maria (Smith) was born about 1765. She married George (Crossley) lawyer. She arrived in NSW with her husband on 26 7 1799 after a voyage of 10months on HILSBOROUGH. She died on 26 9 1817 age52 & was buried, as (Crossley), in the Old Burial Ground St Phillips CofE Sydney-Smees records mistakenly shows arrival on TELLICHERRY. ..George (Crossley) was born in London about 1751 & baptised on 12 12 1751 at St Andrews Holborn London; he became a lawyer/solicitor/attorney. In 1771 he was admitted as attorney of King's Bench in Westminster. After 1year he was charged with endorsing dishonoured bills of exchange worth £1050-resulting in civil action for debt recovery & his arrest in January 1772 to be imprisoned for 12 months. He continued to practise law, working for 24years in the Adelphi Terrace-as attorney of Court of Common Pleas, the Court of Exchequer and the High Court of Chancery. In February 1796 he was accused of forging the Will of Reverend (Lewin) & was found not guilty, despite terrible rumours of his actual conduct. He was soon charged with perjury at Kings Bench London, sentenced to 6months in prison with stints in the pillory & transportation to Australia for 7years=he arrived in NSW as a convict with his wife on 26 7 1799 after a voyage of 10months on HILSBOROUGH. He arrived in NSW with Bills of Exchange which he had intended to pay off-obviously dishonoured-& used them to purchase land on the Hawkesbury River, employed men & set up a well-stocked shop in Sydney Town. He was issued his Conditional Pardon on 4 6 1801, at his own request, but found creditors could now pursue him. His goods were seized on 1 8 1802 & his income almost disappeared. More legal & illegal incidents are detailed above, including his involvement in the Rum Rebellion; after which he was arbitrarily charged with perjury, sentenced to 7years at Coal River (Newcastle), arriving by ship on 20 2 1808 until release on 10 1 1810. He then became a respected businessman, farmer, trader, money-lender and lawyer, but maybe not respectable. He died as an emancipist on 21/6 3 1823 age72/5, with many creditors.
