The Proceedings of the Old Bailey Born 1803. Place of birth Devizes. Gender female. Height 5' 4.25". Religion Catholic. MARTHA SMITH. Theft; pocket-picking. 13th September 1827. 1697. MARTHA SMITH was indicted for stealing, on the 20th of August , 1 watch, value 30s.; 1 watch-chain, value 7s.; 1 seal, value 5s.; 1 watch-key, value 2s.; 1 half-sovereign, and 2l. 5s., in monies numbered, the property of Samson Maynard , from his person ............... Prisoner. When the patrol came up stairs I would not give it up, because I did not know what authority he had; I said I was as well able to keep it as he was - he then took it from me, and the prosecutor told him to call in the morning. Prisoner's Defence (written). I met him at this public-house, and, knowing him, went in the cart with him; when we got to Gray's Inn-lane, he had more drink, and made me almost tipsy; he gave me the money to take care of, and take to his wife; a man said the cart would be taken to the Green-yard, and I went in search of the cart; he, missing me, asked for his property, and the landlady gave me in custody. GUILTY . Aged 24. Transported for Fourteen Years .
