1814 Muster Mary Smith assigned to Mary Doyle; 1816 servant to Mary Doyle; 10 Apr 1816 sent on Lady Nelson to Newcastle for 2 years; 1817 sent to Hobart Town; 1818 back in NSW "married"; 1819 NSW "married to Ambrose Wells"; (note no marriage record has been found for them) 1820 NSW "married"; 1822 back to maiden name Leeson, status single and BC (born in colony); 30 Jun 1823 as Mary Leeson alias Smith married Joseph Bullock alias Stephens at Liverpool; 1825 Castlereigh and Evan Pop. Book Mary Leeson FS (Freed by servitude) wife of Joseph Bullock (Bringelly); 1828 Census Mary Bullock at Bringelly house servant for Jno Blaxland Newington (Joseph Bullock on same page has land); 1831 Mary Bullock had relationship with John Ray convict on T of L from Norfolk Island; 1832? birth of John James Ray son of John Ray and Mary Bullock (no birth record has been found but marriage/death registrations confirm); June 1832 John Ray returned to VDL; 1832 July Mary Smith Sydney to Hobart on Marianne; 17 Dec 1833 now Mary Greenslade in and out of gaol until her death 1847 including 2 years Moreton Bay Penal Settlement Queensland 1834 to 1836 - convictions larceny, drunkenness, obscene behaviour, street walking etc; son in Hobart with father by 1848. When did he join his father?? John Ray snr (convict) children by Mary Coates (convict) in Hobart then married in Melbourne 1852. Family including son John Ray moved to Victoria. John James Ray initially to Bendigo goldfields, then to Port Melbourne as fisherman/ballastman, later to Prahran then Paynesville. John Ray snr and Mary Coates and family baker Ballarat where he died. His legitimate wife Jane Homewood died in Hobart 1864. No divorce papers have been found for them. Birth regn of Thomas son of John Ray and Mary Coates 21 Mar 1859 under previous issue by a former wife is John Ray 22. This is John James Ray born 1832 but here and in shipping record he was born 1837. Both John Ray convict and Mary Bullock were colourful characters!

Colonial conviction: Quart. Sessions Parramatta, 11 Aug 1834, Larceny, sentence 2 years. Returned to Sydney, 12 Nov 1836.
