LONGFORD ASSIZES. Owen Smith, aged 44, and his wife, Catherine Smith, 43, found guilty of setting fire to the house of John Washington Leech, on the 31 of October, 1841 each transported for life. Thos, 14, Mary Smith, 12, Peter Smith 16, (children of the above named Owen and Catherine), and Anthony McKiernan, 31, for same offence—To be each transported for seven years. Westmeath Guardian and Longford News-Letter, 10 Mar 1842. -------------------------------------------------- Anthony Kiernan was also transported on KInnear. On Anthony's indent, Statement of Offence: Offence: Attempting to burn a man’s house together with himself and family, pr Mr Leach. Smith on board for same offence. So, it appears that Owen and Catherine Smith were attempting to burn the house they were living in, which was the property of Mr Leach.

Owen was convicted with his wife Catherine, for arson. His two sons and a daughter were also convicted and sentenced to be transported. He and his sons arrived on Kinnear. His wife and daughter Mary arrived on Waverley. Owen Smith, tried at Longford, 25 Feb 1842. Life. Age 44, height 5ft 7. catholic can read and write a little. Married, 6 children. Offence: Arson. Burning John Washington Leaches house; once for illicit distillation, fined £6. Wife, &c transported. Surgeon’s report: Good. Trade, Farm labourer. Native place, Co Longford. Relations: 3 sons on board- 2 prisoners, Thos, Peter- Edward, Free. W, Catherine transported for same offence also Mary, transported, Catherine, Rose, Free on board with their mother. Four years probation. 2/6/43. 14 days solitary for misconduct in having potatoes in his possession for which ... 4 Sep 1843.
