Van Diemen's Land: Philip SMITH arrived at Hobart, VDL, per the 'Marquis de Hastings' on 8 Nov 1842. Ship Surgeon's Report: "good". 1842: Aged 27 yrs; married man; ploughman/farmer's labourer; 5'7" height; Protestant; can read & write; fresh complexion; brown hair; dk grey eyes; scars on left hand. Native place: Halsham Wife: Matilda, at native place. (No children are listed) Mother: Maria Brothers: Thomas, George & Henry Sister: Maryann Period of primary labour - 23 months. Station Gang: BR (Brown's River ?) 1842: Remarks - "quiet & good" 1844: Having potatoes in his possession. Probation extended 1 month. 21 Dec 1847: Ticket of Leave granted. 1847 & 48: at N N (New Norfolk) 11 Dec 1851: Free Certificate issued. 19 Dec 1853: A Marriage registration for Philip SMITH, aged 37yrs, ploughman to Margaret SMITH, aged 36yrs, widow. At St. George's Church of England, Hobart. (ref: 37/1/12 no. 538) note: Remarriages were permitted within the Colonies of Australia.
Philip was born in the Hailsham area of Sussex England. He was convicted in Dec 1841 of stealing 2 lambs worth 40shillings and was listed as married at that time. His father died only a week or so after his conviction.From Lewes Assises Philip was taken to the prison hulk Leviathan moored in Portsmouth harbour in Hampshire England and from there transferred to the Marquis of Hastings for transportation.Philp's behaviour was described as " bad " and that he " kept bad company."
