The following is a summary of a very full article in the 24th September, 1814, edition of the Glasgow Herald (pages 2 and 3): - GLASGOW HERALD 24 SEPTEMBER 1814 AYR CIRCUIT COURT The Circuit Court of Justiciary was opened in Ayr on Monday last, by the Right Hon. Lord Justice Clerk and Lord Succoth. After the usual preliminary procedure FRANCIS or FRANK ROBERTSON or ROBENSON, ROBERT SMITH, JAMES LAURIE, and MARY McCALL, were brought to the bar, accused of stealing from the cart of John Cunningham, carrier in Saltcoats, while standing near his house, two parcels of cotton yarn, and one of silk, on the evening of the 25th May last; of assaulting James Fleck, farmer in Crosbie of West Kilbride, between Burnfoot of Ardrossan and Ann’s Lodge on the following night, and robbing him of a memorandum-book, containing papers, three guinea notes, and some silver and copper; and of assaulting and beating William Wilson, lately farm-servant to Hugh Lockhart in Chappleton, at Parkhouse, near Ardrossan, on the same night, and robbing him of a silver watch. The jury returned a verdict, finding ROBERTSON and SMITH, guilty of the first charge, viz. theft, finding LAURIE not guilty of that charge, and finding it not proven against McCALL; finding the second charge not proven against ROBERTSON, SMITH, and LAURIE, and McCALL not guilty of it; and finding the third charge not proven against ROBERTSON and SMITH, and LAURIE AND McCALL not guilty of that charge. The Lord Justice Clerk, after admonishing the whole of the pannels, in a serious and impressive manner, to beware of their future conduct, ordained ROBERTSON and SMITH to be transported beyond the seas for fourteen years, and LAURIE and MCCALL to be dismissed from the bar.
